I have a few friends who are a bit famous, and some who will be soon. Not in a better-than-the-little-people way, but in a good way and for good reasons. My friend, Jarrod Jones, is a speaker and Author. He’s had a couple of books written and they both are pretty great. On Wednesday, he will do something to help him be a little more famous. He’s going on a radio show with two famous guys. Jarrod will be on the nationally syndicated Rick and Bubba Show. He will be there to discuss his newest book, “13 Ways to Ruin Your Life.” You should listen because I’m sure it will be a great interview. It starts at 8:06 AM and if you need to know where you can listen in, then here you go:

So I traveled with an axe murderer…

December 22, 2008 at 1:36 pm (Television) (, , , , )

My wife is a horror movie fan. She’s doesn’t watch them as much as she used to, but something about the macabre interests her. Last week there was a show on The Travel Channel called “World’s Most Terrifying Places.” I have had a firm hold on the TV through football season, so we watched what she wanted to watch. It was the standard stuff…places believed to be haunted and terrible things that happened there. Then it came to a pretty disturbing part.

There was a house where a whole family including little children were murdered in 1884 by a man with an axe. It showed a “recreation” that was a little blurry, yet still graphic. I was thinking to myself, “Wow, Travel Channel went all out for this little documentary.” That’s when I saw it in the top left corner:

REALLY? Are you serious Travel Channel? That’s right, the graphic axe-murdering of children I had just witnessed was rated TV G. General Audiences…ok for kids. This is why we don’t let television networks tell us what is and isn’t ok for us or our kids to watch. I have a kid on the way, and this really made me stop and think about what I will or won’t let him or her be exposed to at an early age. Granted, I’m smart enough to know that a program that talks about terrifying places isn’t appropriate for a child, but what if I am not in the room for some reason? What if I have my tv blocked of all programming other than TV G rated programming? This kind of stuff still gets in…Now that’s terrifying!

The [Mundane] Details:
There is actually no governmental regulation on TV ratings. It’s up to individual networks as to what they rate programs.
News programs do not receive ratings.

Making a Movie

December 13, 2008 at 7:02 am (Film) (, , , )

I made this movie using xtranormal. It was pretty simple. It took me about an hour to put it all together and get a final edit. There are many more things you can do with it than what I did. I was just trying it out and to play around. I plan on doing a few more, because right now its free to publish. I guess that means it won’t be free forever…but right now it is, so go have some fun. Please give some feedback on what you think of the movie.

The [Mundane] Details:
73% of people online watch videos.
The average cost to make a movie in 2007 was 106.6 million; This cost me nothing but an hour of my time

Tornado Warning!

December 7, 2008 at 7:32 pm (Television) (, , , , )

Have you seen the Discovery Channel show, “Storm Chasers?” It comes on Sunday nights. I try to watch it when I can or catch it on demand (that’s right, I don’t have tivo). Anyway, it’s a show about several teams of somewhat seemingly stupid people who chase Tornadoes. I want to emphasize SEEMINGLY Stupid, because these people are anything but stupid. They are some of the brightest meteorological minds in the country.

Team 1: IMAX director Sean Casey is trying to make a film about tornadoes. The one shot he’s missing, the “money shot” if you will, is filming from inside a tornado. To accomplish this feat, he has constructed a Tornado Intercept Vehicle, or TIV for short
He is assisted in his efforts by Dr. Josh Wurman who travels in a converted truck that serves as a giant portable radar system. This is the only part of the show that aggravates me. Apparently, Dr. Wurman has a great reputation in the meteorological community, but a lot of the time it seems that his instincts are wrong on where to look for storms, and quite a bit of the time it seems no one on his team even trusts him to put them in the right place.

Team 2: My personal favorite, Reed Timmer and the team from tornadovideos.net. These are more of the “cowboys” of the 2 teams. They drive right up to a storm and get great film which they sell to TV Stations and record data to help with predicting storms. Reed’s instincts, in contrast to Dr. Wurman’s, seem to usually be spot on…at least it looks that way from the Discovery Channel Edits. This show is definitely worth a watch….but unfortunately, if this is the first time you’re hearing of it, tonight was the season finale. I’m sure you can catch reruns, though.

The [Mundane] Details:
Tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctica, but the vast majority occur in the U.S
While the Midwest has more tornados each year and is generally considered “tornado alley,” the mid-south region of Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee actually has more fatalities as a result of tornados.
On March 14, 2008 a Tornado struck the Georgia Dome during the SEC Basketball Tournament. My good friend Shannon White was there at the time.

A great weekend…or a bad one.

December 7, 2008 at 12:00 am (Sports) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I have been looking forward to this weekend all week. Yeah, I know that IS a long time to anticipate something. Today, December 6th, 2008 is a big day for me for a couple of reasons.

1. SEC Championship Game. #1 Alabama vs. #4 Florida. The winner of this game will go on to play for the National Championship in Miami. I feel like I have a stake in this game because I am a really big Alabama fan. The Crimson Tide have been my favorite for all of my 27 years. I feel like Saturdays with Alabama Football are a part of my family. Roll Tide!
CBS 3:00 PM Central Time

2. National Semi-Finals in NCAA Divison II. North Alabama vs. Northwest Missouri State. UNA is my Alma Mater and I love to watch them play . Division II is some of the most exciting football you can watch. Just two weeks ago, Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M played to a 93-68 finish. That’s Arena Football numbers! Roar Lions!
ESPN2 3:00 PM Central Time

As you can see from the start times of both games, I’m going to have to multi-task. CBS broadcasts their games online, so my Mac will be on Bama-Florida, and my TV tuned into UNA-NWMS.

The [Mundane] Details:
Alabama is ranked #1 in the country in every major Poll, but is a 10 point underdog.
The winner of this game is virtually guaranteed a a spot in the BCS Championship Game.
This will be Alabama’s 6th trip to the SEC Championship Game. They have faced Florida every time.

Until Appalachian State in’05, ‘06, and’07, UNA was the only team in NCAA history to have a ‘Three-Peat” of National Championships.
The Harlon Hill Trophy, the D2 equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, is named after UNA graduate and former Chicago Bears standout Harlon Hill.
UNA Sr. Quarterback AJ Milwee is 33-4 as a starter and is one of the 3 finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy this year.
